1st Season - 1942
The Note
What would be renamed "The Note" in later editions, was founded at the very first session in 1942. Volume I Number 1 was titled "Music Camp Notes" under the leadership of its Editor - Carolyn Daniels. The format of the first edition was carried on for years: a two-column format, biographies on the staff and counselors, the repertoire played, insider gossip about each camper, recreation activities, and a list of all the campers and their addresses. This first edition included the camp photo on the cover sheet.
We have an original copy from the very first session of Arrowbear thanks to Alayne Abbott Armstrong. She sent her copy to us years ago to preserve it as part of the history of the camp.
The covers for The Note were unique to each session for over twenty years. Many were creative works of art. It wasn't until 1967 that Rick Ohlendorf designed the cover that would become a permanent fixture on each edition going forward. If you look closely in the fletching on the arrow, you can see his initials, "RO," written in the feathers.
The idea to include copies of The Note in the Archives has percolated for awhile, but it seemed a daunting task. Then in 2024, Robert Walton asked if we wanted his many copies of The Note from the 1960s. How could we refuse? His offer was the impetus for us to start the scanning process. We'll keep adding copies of The Note by decade as we scan them. Please contact us if you have a copy of one of The Notes that you see is missing from below.

Traditions begin, they evolve, and new traditions take their place. In the mid-1980s, The Note evolved and simplified its format. Today The Note includes a list of the session's repertoire along with the contact information for the staff and campers.
